Our Next Adventure(s)

So, our 2nd official book club meeting is complete! The African food was delicious and the conversation was passionate. Our immediate goal as individuals (and as a book club) is to take the personal initiative to speak out about a (global) issue we feel needs a voice and support, within the next month. The issue could be HIV / AIDS in Africa or it could be something else. Speaking out could come in the form of writing a letter to a politician, calling a local politician, starting a petition, organizing a protest/rally; or anything else that will make a statement in some way, shape or form. Every single one of us is capable of at least this much.
Our next book club meeting will be held on Thursday, July 27th at 7pm at Rachel's house, with Jenn as host. Our next book is Blindness by Jose Saramago. Jessica is performing in a concert on Wednesday, July 26th at 8pm. For more information visit www.londonearlyopera.ca.
Lastly, I am beginning to brainstorm about a possible fundraiser gala event to support the fight against HIV / AIDS in Africa. If you are at all interested in helping out with this, then any and all of your thoughts would be appreciated. Visit the following websites for more information about the cause: www.stephenlewisfoundation.org, www.unaids.org, www.aids2006.org.

A Problem with Strange Traffic

There seems to be a problem with locating copies of Strange Traffic by Irene Dische. Chapters online says that the book is out of print, and Amazon.ca only holds a couple of copies. The other recommendation of Carolyn's that received the second highest number of votes was Fugitive Pieces. We may need to consider switching the book choice to this novel since it is readily available. Thoughts?

Film Club

Thanks Gerry and Carolyn for the yummy, theme-appropriate eats last Wednesday! Best lemon gelato ever. I'm a bit anxious about preparing the spread for next month's meeting - I have never made enjera (injera?) before, but there is a first time for everything and I am pleased that you will all be brave enough to partake in my initial forray into the realm of African cooking. I am hoping my adeptness at eating African dishes - a task I perform with both ease and enthusiasm - will inject some degree success into the outcome...and, if not, I'll get takeout.

Anyway, back to the reason I am posting to the blog - I seem to recall that we had decided to try and work out a date to go see Da Vinci. Here are the weekend dates I have available - June 4, June 17 and, hmmmmm, that's it. As far as weekdays go Mondays or Thursdays work best.

First Book Meeting

Hi everyone. I thought the first meeting to discuss Angels and Demons was a lot of fun and went really well. Bravo Joyce for the good direction with the questions you had for us to start us talking. And the refreshments were great Jerry and Caro! By the way, where did the two of you buy your ice-cream maker?

Would love to hear how all of you enjoy the movie, Da Vinci, after you've gone. Scott has about 100 more pages to go to finish the book first. I told him about our ideas for a Robert Langdon actor and he agreed that Pierce would work better than Tom Hanks. But I guess I shouldn't say that until I've seen it first! Well, happy reading of Race Against Time. I am very hyped to try the African food too!

Until we meet again....
